Meet the herd and hear the stories of how they came to the Ranch!
Mustang | Dark Bay Gelding | DOB: 8/2/2005 | Arrival: 4/2009 | Height: 15 hands
Spur has been at the Reckner’s ranch since 2009. The ministry was looking for a horse and found him online, but he was more than we could pay at the time. He was everything we were looking for, and we felt sure he was the horse we’d been praying for. After calling the owner and explaining what we wanted him for, they graciously gave him to us for the exact amount we could afford, which was $700 under the original price. Spur has been an amazing addition to the herd. He can jump 5’ with a rider and 6’ without a rider. (We don’t jump him that high for safety reasons.) He is also a fast barrel racer and is performing better and better as a cattle cutting horse. He is one of the fastest horses on the property and has a huge heart. One of his own tricks is lying down just to show off. Everybody loves this big, handsome boy.
Chestnut Mare | DOB: 4/18/2008 | Arrival: 12/2009 | Height: 14.2 hands
Thunder was donated to HGMM in 2009. She was an untrained, spoiled mare who was a terrible biter, but was very smart. She was the featured horse to be trained during the very first Horsemanship Summit in 2010. Six months later, she was used for riding lessons and did an excellent job. She is now one of the most gentle and well-trained horses on the ranch.
Quarter Horse/ Tennessee Walker | Buckskin Gelding | DOB: 1/1/2005 | Arrival: 8/21/2005 | Height 15.2 hands
Rawhide was donated to the ministry but then was given to Bethany Reckner, as the ministry was trying to replace the two horses that she had sold the year before. He was a trail horse when she got him, and he is now starting reining and gaming training along with ground work as well. He is becoming great company to his owner and looks like a bodyguard to his handler.
Quarter pony-cross | Brown & White/Paint Gelding | DOB: 4/4/2010 | Arrival: 6/14/2014 | Height: 13.2 hands
Billy was donated to the ministry in 2014 and has become a fun child’s pony. He is working on games training for riding lessons. He is a calm and steady pony who is willing to go where he is asked. He is becoming a great friend to the children and likes to add in his own style for fun during events. Billy has a sweet and gentle character that works well for the ministry.
Paso Fino | Black Gelding | DOB: 11/8/2002 | Arrival: 5/2003 | Height: 13 hands
Oreo was given to the Reckner family in 2003. He was one year old and very wild. He had never been ridden, but the Reckners were patient and he became a patient, gentle, and calm gelding. He is a great horse and a favorite among the younger children. He is very smooth and very responsive to his handlers. He will follow the handler wherever they go, allowing little ones to feel like they’re riding all by themselves.
Quarter Horse/Haflinger Grey Roan/Paint Mare | DOB: 4/20/2010 | Arrival: 4/2010 | Height: 14 hands
Splash was born here on the Ranch. Her mom is Pie and she’s the only foal out of her daddy, who was a Quarter horse and one of the first colts ever born on the Reckners’ ranch in FL. She came unexpectedly, the day after one of our camps. She would tag along with her mom during camps as she grew up into a fine, stocky little mare. She is now a quiet, steady mare that allows riders of all ages to ride her and is being trained in basic reining and cattle cutting work.
Palomino Mare | DOB: 9/28/2007 | Arrival: 5/2011 | Height: 15 hands
Destria first came to the ranch as a young filly, along with her mother who came in for training. She was given in exchange for the training of her mom. She was later sold and returned to the ranch to be trained when she was three years old. In 2011, she came back for good, due to her owner moving out of the area. They sold her to Timothy Reckner, who had been interested in buying her back since her return for training. Since then, Timothy has continued to train and improve her skill level and training, including dressage, western, and jumping.
Chestnut Gelding | DOB: 6/25/2005 | Arrival: 4/5/2012 | Height: 14.3 hands
Emery Reckner was returning to the Ranch with his sister after participating in a Civil War Reenactment, when their trailer broke down. As they were fixing it, a stranger driving past asked if they lived at the Ranch on the hill on Collins Road (The Reckner’s house and HGMM Ranch). They responded that they did and the stranger said that he had a horse he wanted to donate to the ministry. Emery, already searching for a better horse, was interested. About a week later, he went to pick up the horse, whom he soon named Scout. Over the past year, Emery has put a lot of time into his training. Scout had a rough life before he came to the gentleman who would later give him to Emery. He has needed to rebuild trust in humans, and now Emery has started him on cattle cutting work.
Pie & Cherry
Cherry: Registered Haflinger | Sorrel Mare | DOB: 2/2/2002 | Arrival: 5/2005 | Height: 13.1 hands, Pie: Haflinger | Sorrel Mare | DOB: 3/24/2001 | Arrival: 5/2005 | Height: 13.2 hands
Pie and Cherry are a working team, Pie being the “Lead” mare and Cherry being the “Off” mare. This team was bought in 2004 while the Reckner family still lived in Florida. These two mares are very reliable and are often used during camps and riding lessons. They are a fun, little team and one of our favorite things to do with them when it snows is to take them out hooked up to the sleigh(skid), complete with old sleigh bells ringing through the fields mixed with the singing and laughter of children enjoying the ride!
